A Fear Of Embarrassment


There are people who suffer from a fear of embarrassment. This fear can develop into an intense and unwarranted terror or agoraphobia. Agoraphobia was named after a Greek market and it literally translates to mean a fear of being exposed to a situation or situation publicly where embarrassment can occur. With some agoraphobics this can extend to include anxiety attacks. However, not all agoraphobics hide away in their homes and avoid any risk of embarrassment. Some are able to fend quite well in places where they are able to control the situation.

It has been shown scientifically that the majority of agoraphobics are women, though some men can suffer it too. It has been estimated by researchers that 2.7 to 5.7% of the population suffers from some level of agoraphobia. In fact, agoraphobia can begin as young as 15 or as late as 35.

A fear of embarrassment in its extreme does appear in families, but the reasons for this have not yet been discovered by scientists. However, they all share at least one or more of the following commonalities in their fears:

• loneliness
• loss of control in varied public areas
• being in a location where escape may be tricky
• Staying at home for lengthy periods
• estrangement or detachment feelings from other people
• helplessness
• the need to be dependant on other people
• a feeling that their body is not real
• a feeling that their surroundings and environment are not real
• panic or anxiety attacks or just general anxiety
• irritability, sweaty palms, and general change in behavior

Other more physical reactions can also occur in people suffering more severe forms of the fear of embarrassment, including:

• lightheadedness or fainting
• sudden dizziness (not to be confused with the signs of a heart attack or stroke)
• extreme perspiration or sweating
• flushing of the skin
• difficulties in breathing or the sensation of breathing problems (not to be confused with an obstruction in the throat, an asthma attack or severe allergic reaction)
• pains in the chest, jaw, stomach, arms or neck (not to be confused with the signs of a possible heart attack)
• pounding heart, irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations (not to be confused with the signs of a heart attack)
• vomiting or simple nausea
• tingling, pins and needles and numbness in any body part (not to be confused with the signs of a stroke or impending heart attack)
• butterflies in the stomach, gassy abdomen or cramping
• mental confusion, disorganized or odd thoughts (not to be confused with the signs of a stroke)
• a deep terror of going completely mad
• a deep terror of dying

In the majority of cases, an agoraphobic person or someone who has an intense fear of embarrassment can relieve their symptoms by leaving the situation where the embarrassment occurred or by just simply going home.

Unfortunately, an intense fear of embarrassment can lead to anxiety or panic attacks in certain situations where the person begins to feel as if they are losing control, insecure, distant from a place of comfort, or trapped. The majority of agoraphobics are able to develop ways to combat this by simply avoiding any situation that may lead to such an attack. To understand this better, a person can suffer an anxiety or panic attack in a severe form that can continue anywhere from 10 minutes to as much as a week. So, it is no surprise that the person would want to avoid suffering this because such attacks are very disruptive to normal living.

Each person is different in the situations that can trigger their fear of embarrassment. Some people find that socializing, driving a vehicle, going to church services or other meeting places, and shopping by themselves can trigger the fear. Ultimately, the fear of embarrassment soon develops into a fear of having an anxiety or panic attack, which leads to the person’s withdrawal from normal life. This can greatly detriment their ability to socialize, have relationships with others and their ability to perform in a work situation.

A fear of embarrassment is not a mental illness, but when it develops into agoraphobia it needs to be treated by a medical professional. There have been many famous people who have suffered from this, and in some ways, every person has a situation that they prefer to avoid because of the fear of embarrassment. However, for most people, the choice is not to avoid, but to face our fears.

Separation Anxiety Disorder


WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Between the ages of 8 months and 2 years, it's normal for a child to cry when its mother leaves the room or a stranger enters it. Neither overprotection nor constant punishment will change the situation. It's a natural stage that usually passes on its own.

If, however, an older child continues to react to potential separations with unreasonable fear, professional help may be needed. If the problem isn't resolved, it can damage the child's self image, leading to teenage and adult emotional problems.

Causes

Separation anxiety disorder may run in families. It is most likely to affect shy, nervous children. The disorder is often triggered by a major change in the child's life, such as a death or hospitalization, the parents' separation or divorce, a new school, or a move.

Signs/Symptoms

Children with this disorder express their anxiety in a variety of ways:

• Screaming or temper tantrums when left with others
• Insistence on sleeping with parents in their room
• Difficulty going to sleep
• Fear of the dark
• Nightmares
• Fear of sleeping away from home
• Difficulty settling down
• Fear of meeting new people
• Clinging to parents at home
• Following parents from room to room
• Worrying about the family's safety in the home
• Fear of going to school
• Headaches, bellyaches, or body aches when a separation approaches
• Sadness
• Quietness
• Lack of concentration

Care

This disorder poses the threat of a vicious circle in which the child's dependence and the parents' protectiveness reinforce and amplify each other. For that reason, both the parents and the child may need to see a counselor. If the youngster refuses to go to school, an immediate priority is to arrange a return as quickly as possible.

Risks

If this problem isn't successfully resolved, it can lead to greater emotional problems, such as depression, as the child grows older.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

• Try to prepare the child for a change such as a divorce or a move. Talk openly about such changes and encourage him to voice his worries. Give reassurance that everyone will be safe.

• Discuss the problem with the child's teachers. They may be able to give you tips for dealing with this disorder both at home and at school.

• Praise and reward the child for overcoming his fears.

• The child can't sleep.
• You fear you will lose patience with the child.

• persistently and excessively fearful or reluctant to be alone or without major attachment figures at home or without significant adults in other settings

• persistent reluctance or refusal to go to sleep without being near a near a major attachment figure or to sleep away from home

• repeated nightmares involving the theme of separation

• repeated complaints of physical symptoms (such as headaches, stomachaches, nausea, or vomiting) when separation from major attachment figures occurs or is anticipated

The duration of the disturbance is at least 4 weeks.

The onset is before age 18 years.

The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, academic (occupational), or other important areas of functioning.

The disturbance does not occur exclusively during the course of a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Schizophrenia, or other Psychotic Disorder and, in adolescents and adults, is not better accounted for by Panic Disorder With Agoraphobia.

There are several symptoms associated with a sinus infection. Sinusitis dizziness is among the least common symptoms associated with the condition. The Diagnosis of Anxiety: Many Disorders for a Single Name


Common stresses prod a lot of us to feel some amount of anxiety. The anxiety plays a protective role by forcing us to put more effort and attention on things that strongly impact our livelihood. The effect of anxiety only becomes destructive when it begins to become the center of a person's everyday life. Under some circumstances, mental health workers consider anxiety to be a serious clinical problem. The trouble for most is in understanding when anxiety crosses the threshold from normal to disruptive. Indeed, the laymen use of the word anxiety masks its complexity as a whole group of disorders recognized by mental health physicians and noted by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Conditions range in degree of seriousness, from milder forms (e.g. generalized anxiety disorder or GAD), to more serious ones (e.g. obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD). Alleviation of symptoms of powerful anxiety illness, if not the total cure, is an aim which will necessitate an understanding the nature, origins and category of anxiety.

Everyday stressors, encompassing situations such as changing jobs or quitting a career, are all sources of anxiety. Nervousness, jumpy feelings, and extra attention to detail are responses to these events of normal intensity of anxiety. In contrast, those suffering from an anxiety disorder will experience much more powerful versions of these emotions. In addition, people with anxiety disorders are also overcome with persistent worry and feelings of doom, to the extent that they also endure physical symptoms such as tiredness, headaches, trembling and sweating.

Questions about bad dreams, insomnia, level and persistence of feelings of fear will be asked by the health worker. However, diagnosis is not a trivial task as the list of apparently subjective criteria seems to imply. It is true while each symptom alone does not signify unequivocal diagnosis of anxiety disorder, the sum effect of several symptoms can convince the mental health worker the case of and type of anxiety disorder.

The root causes of all these anxiety disorder is a final question in the thoughts of many. Our incomplete understanding of the nature and chemistry of the brain means our understanding of anxiety is also murky, as is true for literally all psychiatric conditions. Three sorts of root causes are commonly cited: environmental, neurochemical, and genetic. Those who believe anxiety to be largely rooted in environmental reasons think it is like diabetes. Those who acquire Type II diabetes adopt a lifestyle the habits of which make them prone to obesity. The body's response to such environment is believed to be insulin resistance. In the same way, anxiety disorders can be generated from physiological responsesi to permanently stressful situations. Likewise, brain chemistry is thought to be the basic cause of anxiety disorders. Under normal circumstances, the body emits chemicals that stimulate stress responses or chemicals that inhibit "calm" signals. If the release of chemical become dysregulated, the brain may be subjected to unending stimulation and anxiety levels can spiral out of control. Finally, some believe that anxiety disorders are borne out of genetic background. Indeed, anxiety seems to run in parent-child relationships, embodying the proof of the theory. Correct diagnosis can make a difference in procuring the correct treatment for illnesses of this complexity.

Sepsis Food Poisoning


Food poisoning is a sepsis(The presence of harmful microorganisms or associated toxins in the blood and tissues), that is caused by consuming foods that are contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, toxins, viruses, prions or parasites. These contaminations are normally as a result of improper handling, storage or preparation of food. Pesticides added to food can also add in the likelyhood of consumption of the viruses. Contact that Pests, such as flies and cockroaches have with food, further increases the change of contamination.

Because symptoms often don't occur for several hours after the contaminated food is eaten, it is hard at times to 'pin the tail on the donkey' and figure out exactly where it came from. Initial Food Poisoning symptoms generally include: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, nausea, abdominal pain, headache or tiredness. Typically our body is able to recover by itself from the poisoning, after a short period of time. In rare cases, especially with babies and pregnant women, food poisoning can result in permanent health problems, and in even more extreme cases, death.

The time that passes between the food consuption and the actual presence of the virus, is known as the incubation period. During this period microbes are passed through the stomach and into the intestine where they attach the cells that line the intestinal wall. They then being to multiply.

Practicing good hygiene during the three stages of food preparation(before, after, during), can greatly reduce the chance of food poisoning. Be smart about your health and take the necessary precautions when working with food.

5 Ways To Calm Yourself Down Effectively


We all have felt stress before, or have times when we wish we knew how to calm down! No matter how confident and relaxed you are, you know what it's like to be nervous before an interview, trembling before you are about to give speech, or cold and clammy when you're about to pick up your date. Nearly everyone feels nervous over some issues, yet many never seek knowledge to learn how to calm down properly. Life is too short to go through it drowning in your anxiety. Learn how to calm yourself down!

The point of this article is to provide you with five different ways to release your tension and calm yourself. Hardly anyone will actually notice that you are using them. My ways will not have you sitting in a meditation position on the floor, or chanting mantras to yourself to relax, so no worries. When you calm yourself these ways, your will not detach yourself from your environment, but instead integrate yourself in unison to it while you mentally move inward to obtain steadiness. You should not feel tired or detached. You should simply become "in the zone" as you calm down - Alert, focused and relaxed; your nerves at ease.

Reframe

So, something has you stressed out. First, ask yourself: Does it really matter? Are you feeling nervous over trivial issues? Most of the time, probably. It is incredible to watch the ways in which the general populace react and lose composure over the smallest sources of stress. Go to the supermarket - watch a couple argue over which bread to buy. Watch a mother scream at her child for pulling a box of cereal off the rack. You may think "Jeez woman... calm down!" In her mind though, such an issue is apparently losing her calm over. Watch someone throw a tantrum in the checkout line because an item is 10 cents more than it was labeled as. Are any of those things worth loosing your calm and freaking out about? I would say no. Everyone can work toward remaining calm during such trivial events. Some things are no-brainers (such as the supermarket examples). However, when you find or define yourself and purpose in Life, you will find that literally nothing except those things which pertain to your missions are worth becoming stressed about. I speak from experience: the only times in the last year which I have felt stress are when things which pertain directly to my purposes in Life have been threatened.

Aside from those ways, nearly anything can go wrong and yet I remain 100% calm. Why? Because unless it effects my ability to live out my purpose in Life, it does not effect my reality! In addition to asking yourself "does it really matter", another solid reframing technique to calm yourself down is to take step back. See yourself in the third person. Move farther away and see your World and your place among humanity. Step back, further and further. See your Life. Move farther away and see the Universe and all of Creation. Realize your trivial daily stress is absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of existence (or your Life, for that matter)!

Write it Out

Many are able to calm down and find relief from stress by telling someone close about their worries. If someone is not available to listen and help them calm down, a journal works great. Keeping a journal has been proven to help reduce stress. Make a commitment to yourself that you will keep one for a month - you may begin to find yourself needing to calm yourself down during your day less and less! When keeping your journal, make your accounts as vivid as possible. The more descriptive your writing is, the less your mind will need to hang onto the recorded events. Another way to calm yourself is slightly shorter and sweeter. Carry a notepad and pen. If something in your day is causing you to lose your calm, write it out clearly on the paper, describing it in detail. Writing it out will help put it into perspective and force you to think about the root cause. Next, rip it into little, iddy-biddy pieces and throw in the trash or toilet. Disposing of it is symbolic of ridding yourself of the stress and beginning to calm yourself. Remind yourself where you sent it in the event that you loose your calm over it in the future.

Identify

Identify the true cause of the stress. Ask yourself: what is that is really preventing you from being calm? Is it the current situation, or something else in the back of your mind? Is the guy in traffic really pissing you off? Or, is the fact that you fought with your spouse before you left for work? In order to remove stress from your Life, you must be able to properly identify its cause. Problems may only be solved by addressing the root cause, not containing the effects. As a statistical problem solver for General Motors, I came to realize this: containments and fixes for a problem are inferior in effectiveness compared to addressing the root cause. You can contain a stress problem for years via using different ways to calm yourself down, but until you address the root cause, the stress will continue indefinitely. If you are having trouble remaining calm, work down the ladder to identify the root cause. Address that, and you will find much of your stress is merely effects of the root cause.

"Mow"

I was blessed to have been raised by a father with an incredible work ethic. I have prided myself in my die-hard ability to work a 100 hour week once or twice a year during a product launch. My father however, works 80-90 hours every single week. How does he calm himself down after work and remain stress-free? He "mows." Literally, he does mow the lawn. He often stated how everyone must have their own "mowing" to engage in; lest they work themselves to death. After a long day, he would often mow the lawn and unwind in the process before going to bed; at which time he would be completely calm. It still provided him a sense of accomplishment and took care of something which needed to be done, yet at the same time provided a way to calm down. Everyone must find a "mowing" activity which they enjoy and commit themselves to engage in it when they are going through periods of stress. Be it dancing, drawing, jamming on the digideroo, playing the violin, beating the shit out of a heavy bag or gardening; any form of "mowing" is essential to reducing stress and serving as a real way to calm down.

Plan

Did you just find out you're going to be expelled from your school? Did you just receive your two-week notice at work? Did you just find out your daughter totaled her car yesterday? You're probably shitting bricks. Shit you no more. Now is the time to remain calm. Making a plan in stressful circumstances is key to getting your ass out in one piece. If you are driving down the road when something bad happens and you throw your arms up in the air, screaming, what happens to your car? If you are driving through Life and something bad happens, do not throw your arms up in the air and scream! Your Life will go in the ditch! Hold onto the wheel. Figure out how you will escape!

I am extremely emotionally intelligent person. Thus, at any time I am usually experiencing some sort of complicated (yet positive) emotion. However, when something uncertain or threatening presents itself in my Life, I usually become much less emotional than I am typically. It is due to my realization that in order to escape any circumstance, I must remain coolheaded. I must see the situation in its proper lighting, devise an escape or damage control plan and execute it ASAP. Emotions may be used to fuel the execution of the plan, but not the conception of it. When you need to calm down after receiving shocking news, force yourself to go into objective, cool-headed, scientific planning mode and you increase your odds of succeeding one hundred fold.

Children And Halitosis, Bad Breath


Children can have bad breath just as easily as their parents. When the Webmaster of badbreathgone.com asked me to write an article on halitosis (bad breath) and children, my first thought was, “Great, a no brainer!” As an RN and mother who also works in close contact with children in a daycare, I’ve got plenty of good insight into halitosis in our little ones.

When you smell the breath of a healthy child it smells fresh and clean. If it doesn’t, then use this checklist of the most probable causes of the halitosis/bad breath:

1. Dehydration.(which is more common than most people suspect)
2. Overeating and consequent poor digestion.
3. Eating food that promotes yeast/ candida.
4. Incipient or undiagnosed illness/ infection, low immune system.
5. Too much sugar.
6. Dental problems.
7. Not well-rested, too much activity.

As a parent and RN I often try to smell a child’s breath. I can tell you that the children who come to the ER with bronchitis or asthma all have halitosis/ bad breath. Why? Because they have an infection and/or food allergy, and 9 times out of 10 are dehydrated.

So what can parents and caregivers do to give our children sweet smelling breath?

1. Be sure your child drinks enough water - and I mean water - not juices or soda. Juices, and soda particularly, dehydrate your child and load up the system with sugar. And sugar provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, viruses and parasite fungus/ yeast and candida.

2. Monitor your child’s eating. Too much food, or food eaten too often, will not digest properly, and will ferment and create toxicity that smells bad.

3. Sugar – again. White sugar increases halitosis, and also nourishes infections and yeast infections/ candida. Cut it down, or better, cut it out if you want fresh breath (and many other benefits besides).

4. Halitosis is a sign that the body needs something. It could be as simple as more water, or perhaps the entire immune system needs a boost. See my article on flu to help boost your child’s immune system.

5. Be sure to have regular dental check-ups. I could say much more about this, but let’s keep it simple. Just follow through and make those appointments.

The Child Playhouse: A Door To A Wonderful World


Child psychologists say that children need to have their own personal sanctuary—a place that they can call their own. While this doesn’t mean that they should get their own apartment (they can’t even reach the kitchen counter, much less make their own meals), they should have a place in the house where they can escape. This is their “private space”, where they feel safe and can retreat to if they need to be alone.

Why is this so important? According to child psychologists, from the age of one, children already begin coming to terms with their sense of self: I am a separate person, different from Mommy and Daddy and the world. They start to develop their independence (even if it means saying no to everything you say). They explore their skills and test their limits, gaining satisfaction from every task they accomplish: “Look what I did!”

A room (or playhouse) of one’s own

Parents can give children a special Playhouse—literally a space that’s completely theirs, where they can close the door and pretend that they are in their own beautiful world. They can retreat to their playhouse whenever they want quiet time, even choose to nap here if they like. The fact that they have the freedom to do this anytime they please, and that this is their house and not Mommy’s or Daddy’s, gives an immeasurable boost to their self-esteem. “I have control over my world. However, their décor can perfectly complement a themed room, and they will bring hours of indoor fun (after all, if they can’t go outside, they can still go somewhere).

However, some playhouses can be kept outside, and are made of materials that are easily wiped clean (shoes can get really muddy out in the yard!). You can even have a sleepover in them—your child will be proud to invite his friends over to his house). These are ideal for homes that have limited space, or for kids who love being outdoors.

There are many things that children can do in their playhouse. In fact, one of the benefits that they bring to tired, distracted parents is that you can let them play on their own without worrying if they’re getting into trouble—they’re safely indoors, in an easily-monitored area, and not running around at the risk of breaking things (or worse, breaking their necks). Here are just some of the playhouse activities your child can enjoy:

Tea parties. Let your child play host or hostess in a mini tea party with stuffed animals or friends in their playhouse. You will need a plastic tea set (or let them use plastic plates, or an inexpensive set of real plates if they’re older). Then prepare finger food like sandwiches, fruit balls, brownies or cookies. Let your child dress up as he or she would for a real party. If you will be bringing over friends, you can even print out invitations. Put your child’s playhouse address, e.g. “Jenny’s Castle, North Bedroom, 123 Green Road.” For the invitation, use the same motif as the playhouse.

Decorating. Let your child “decorate” the playhouse with simple crafts that you can do together. Look at the playhouse theme for inspiration. For example, you can make a star-shaped picture frame to match the stars painted on the walls, or create an animal mobile with stencils or computer print outs for a circus playhouse.

Miniature playhouses. Your child will love making a miniature version of his or her playhouse for a favorite toy. You will need cardboard boxes, paint, a cutter to make the windows (it’s best if you do this yourself), and glue. You can buy embellishments at a scrapbook or craft’s store for the windows and doors. You can also make paper dolls for this miniature playhouse to represent different members of your family.

Playhouse sign. Personalize the playhouse with a special welcome mat or sign with your child’s name. You can print the letters of the name out from the computer, or use scrapbook materials for a pretty background (also try embellishments like beads and stickers). Frame or laminate the sign and hang on the door. For the welcome mat, buy a plain mat and let the child paint on it.

Anxiety in Children: When Does Normal Apprehension and Fear Turn Problematic?

Everyone experiences fear and anxiety throughout their lives, yet understanding the fear and anxiety the people we love experience is very difficult, especially in children. It is normal for parents to want to know if the anxiety and fear their child is experiencing is normal. Parents find themselves asking, "How do I tell the difference between normal fears and abnormal fears?" Or parents might ask, "How do I know if my child's fear is becoming a problem?" The Skinny on Fat Burners

Keep in mind though that caffeine does have some side effects as well. At higher doses caffeine can cause slowed heart rate, hypertension, nervousness, irritability, insomnia and gastrointestinal distress. It is also a diuretic which causes the kidneys to excrete more fluid than normal which can dehydrate the body. Caffeine will not help you lose weight on its own, but if taken before aerobic exercise it can help increase fat burning and help you exercise longer.

HCA, or hydroxyl citric acid, has the purported effects of inhibiting the conversion of fat by blocking the enzyme ATP citrate lyase and to decrease appetite. Naringin is a substance that is isolated from grapefruit and is an inhibitor of an enzyme that metabolizes caffeine and has been shown to possibly prolong caffeine's fat burning effects.

Synephrine is the active compound in the fruit of a plant called citrus aurantium. Synephrine is chemically similar to the ephedrine found in many cold/allergy medications and a number of weight loss and energy supplements, which contain ma huang. Its purported benefits are to increase the metabolic rate, increase calorie expenditure, promote weight loss and increase energy.

Guggulsterone possibly works in stimulating the thyroid gland. This would speed up the metabolism. It may also lower cholesterol. The trouble is, as with many of these herbs, is that they have not been studied enough to prove that they really work, and that they are safe from any side effects.

Yohimbine raises the metabolism by increasing the release of norepinephrine, one of the adrenal hormones. Studies have shown that this product did have a weight loss effect but as with most other products of this kind, long term use and side effects have yet to be studied.

In essence, fat burners may work to some extent but at what possible long term cost? With the lack of studies done on most of these products as to not only there effectivness, but also there possible side effects, it would be safe to say that it would be best to avoid most of these products. Caffeine, if used in moderate amounts, may well be your best bet for a pre-exercise fat burning aid but use it sparingly and if you feel any of the previously mentioned side effects or any other symptoms from caffeine use, stop and consult your doctor before continuing use.
