Overcoming the Career Change Fear - Part 1

Fear is one of the most common obstacles that keep people from moving forward with their passions and making their dreams reality.

You may have heard this one before, but FEAR is just an acronym for False Evidence Appearing Real. Fear comes in various shapes and forms, but when it comes to achieving goals and dreams, the biggest fear is the fear of failure.

Being afraid to fail is very common; practically every one of us has it to some degree. It's part of the human condition. Don't let it stop you from achieving what you want in life. I read somewhere before that Failure is just Feedback, and I believe that whole-heartedly.

Think back to when you first learned to ride a bike. I'm sure you didn't just climb on the back of it and take off. Like most kids, you probably wobbled and crashed the first few times. But did you tell yourself you couldn't do it and just give up? Did you criticize yourself and let the fear of crashing again keep you from climbing on the back of your bike again? No, you didn't. Instead, you got back up and tried again. You also learned (feedback). You learned how to balance. You learned how to stop the bike and put your feet down to keep from falling over. And eventually, you learned how to ride a bike.

When Thomas Edison set out to invent the first "practical" light bulb, there were many failed attempts. Hundreds and hundreds actually. But Edison did not look at them as failures. Instead, he looked at each of those failed attempts as how "not" to make a light bulb. Imagine what the world might be like today had he given up...

Thomas Edison's way of thinking is exactly how you need to view any failures you might encounter when setting out on your new career path. Any time you don't succeed at something, don't look at it as a failure, but instead one way "not" to achieve what you set out to achieve. Don't let failed attempts get you down. Instead, take some time to analyze why that approach didn't work and then try a different approach. By doing this, sooner or later, you will succeed.

If you find that you have a real problem with the limiting fear of failure, take some time to read more about your fear and the psychological dynamics that are at play. There are many helpful articles on the Internet that have helpful tips on how to overcome this problem, as well as many books on the topic. The best way to overcome "any" problem is to learn all you can about it and the various ways to overcome it. Then follow through and rid yourself of it.

Feeling afraid when setting out to do something new is very normal. You just want to make sure you don't let it control you or keep you from pursuing what you want. Everyone is capable of succeeding-you just need to believe in yourself and keep moving forward with your plan.
